Rome

On June 13, we picked up Chris' mother Cathy and brother Steven at the Rome airport to begin their two week trip with us.  We decided to "live like Roman's" and rented an apartment in the picturesque section of Trestevere.  We now understand why people refer to Rome a 24 hour city.  People were out partying on the narrow streets until the early hours of the morning (including us) and the place was always bustling.  We had a total blast looking out our windows as everything under the sun rolled by including the marching band.

Thanks to Cathy's confession at the Vatican, we were able to "secure" tickets to the canonization of Padre Pio.  We thought we had "special seats" until we showed up in the morning and saw 300,000 people in Vatican City waiting in a Rome heat wave to see the Pope (many of them were holding the same tickets).  We saw the Pope and left early due to the 100 degee heat at 11am (700 people were taken to the hospital that day).

The grandeur of Rome is difficult to described in words.  In a casual conversation about our visit, here are some words and phrases we used to describe it:

Awesome, powerful, amazing, electric, vibrant, stunning, an architectural feat, one giant living art museum, it's a miracle that hands built this city, the heart of civilization as we know it........
